LET STATION organized the final public debate on the importance of recognizing corruption and conflict of interest

On 30th of March 2021 was held the activity: „Public debate on the importance of recognizing corruption and conflict of interest”. It took place with a physical presence in the premises of the social enterprise „Club LET”, established within the LET STATION and live streaming on the ZOOM online platform, given the specific situation due to the COVID pandemic. The purpose of the public debate is legal education of the citizens, but also the openness of the institutions for cooperation which are key elements for restoring the trust in the protection mechanisms. The public debate was held as part of the project: „Fight against Corruption” implemented by the Association for Legal Education and Transparency LET STATION, and funded by the USAID Civic Engagement Project.

During the debate, the project coordinator Dzengis Berisha presented individually implemented activities of the project and the video „Corruption and conflict of interest” which through an illustrative presentation of basic information on the fight against corruption and the reporting procedure/mechanisms, and the representative from FOSM presented the report and the results of the research regarding corruption at the local level and monitoring of the integrity systems in 5 municipalities (Zelino, Karpos, Dojran, Ohrid and Prilep).

The legal advisor from the Association LET STATION – Hristina Zdraveska presented the results that emerged from the implementation of project activities and daily communication with citizens who have been victims of corrupt behavior or conflict of interest. According to this, she shared that the ordinary citizen usually can not recognize corruption, because none of us knows what behavior and actions are corrupt.

At the same time, the participants had the opportunity to give their comments, discuss and share their experiences related to corruption.

Finally, it was summarized that it is necessary:

  1.  Correct and comprehensive identification of cases of corruption at the local level
  2. Creating a practice for appropriate action
  3. Breaking the myth about the emergence of corruption as abstract and unattainable for the ordinary citizen
  4. Recognition and undertaking of concrete measures for fight against corruption by the citizens, especially from the marginalized communities, which are most affected by this phenomenon at local level and
  5. Creating comprehensive positive changes in the narrative of all stakeholders, because the approach does not target only the citizens, but in parallel with them the associations and local institutions.
